The Maya Festival 3rd Edition!! A Triumph of Empowerment and Artistic Expressions

My Age Zimbabwe from 12 July to 13 July hosted the MAYA Festival in Masvingo, themed “Spaces, Solutions, and Solidarity” that focused on the Bodily Autonomy of Women, raising awareness and promoting discussions about the issue of women’s bodily autonomy with the use of art including dance,music,spoken word ,theater performances and more The festival focused on various aspects related to bodily autonomy, including reproductive rights, gender-based violence, sexual health, and empowerment, highlighting the importance of respecting women’s agency and promoting their right to make decisions regarding their own bodies.

It brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including members of the community, young people, policymakers, and parents. It provided a valuable platform for young artists to showcase their talent and creativity, while also fostering a sense of empowerment and solidarity among attendees. Speaking at the MAYA Festival the Minister of State represented by Rose Chingwe said that This festival provides a vital platform to elevate the voices, experiences, and creative expressions of individuals and communities who have historically been marginalized.

“It is in these shared spaces where we find the solutions to the inequalities that continue to plague our society. And it is through solidarity – the coming together across differences in a spirit of mutual care and support – that we build the collective power necessary to enact meaningful and lasting change,”said Mrs Chingwe.

The Maya Festival 3rd was a remarkable testament to the transformative power of the arts in promoting social change and fostering a more equitable and inclusive society. A Safe and inclusive space where individuals can come together to explore and address the challenges faced by women in asserting control over their bodies was created at the festival. With a lineup of renowned performers, thought-provoking exhibitions, and engaging workshops, the MAYA Festival captivated audiences and left a lasting impression.

The festival featured a wide range of artistic disciplines, including music, dance, drama, poetry, visual arts, and crafts, in addition to the artistic showcases, the festival also offered workshops,, and interactive sessions conducted by professional artists and industry experts, these sessions provide valuable learning opportunities for young artists to enhance their skills and gain insights into different artistic techniques and practices.
